Shelters can much more effectively contribute to the lessening of future stray dog populations by making two changes:

  1. Prioritize the sheltering of stray female dogs, maintaining separation between them and stray male dogs within the shelter.

  2. Create or reserve a section of the shelter for collaboration with current and future catch, spay and release groups, offering a safe, comfortable space for recently spayed female strays to recover from surgery.

Shelter owners can optimize their shelter’s by making the following two changes:

  1. Instead of depending on standard dog food, they can utilize their local markets for food. Everything from the vegetable vendors to meat vendors have something to offer for cheap, if not free.

  2. Configure a space within the shelter to house volunteers! It doesn’t need to be anything fancy. After that, advertise on volunteer applications. There are plenty of people, especially foreigners, willing to go on adventures in non-touristic areas of countries.

As communities witness the positive impact of these efforts, they will be more likely to become actively involved.
